There is no middle ground, it is either a case of celebrating a win or suffering a loss; whether it be laying (betting on a horse not to win) or backing (betting on a horse to win or get placed).

Like any other sport, Racing and the gambling element, it has evolved its own language, rules and rituals. None of this was designed to deter those who want to experience the sport but neither can it be argued that it's helpful to newcomers trying to make a decision that involves risking money.
We are not out to criticise Racing or gambling but simply to highlight that this form of entertainment can be spoiled by losing money. Staying in control is critical to getting the most out of the game and can be one of the few events where you can walk away with more than you started with as well as having had an enjoyable experience.
